Average Rail Ticket Values Fall Again for Evolvi Users in 2017

Evolvi Rail Systems has revealed that the average ticket value (ATV) for users of its online rail booking and fulfilment technology fell from £57.02 5o £56.82 across 2017.

The smart purchasing options inherent in the EvolviNG system and Evolvi's API continue to enable TMCs and their clients to navigate the complexities of UK rail fares and to nullify recent annual fares increases. Indeed, the 2017 ATV of £56.82 compares to £59.03 paid in 2013, despite year-on-year fares increases of up to 3.9% over the period.

"The ability of users of Evolvi technology to set bespoke rules for rail travel and gain easy access to best value fares is driving continued growth in transaction volumes, which in 2017 stood at more than 8.6m, up from 8.2m," says Ken Cameron, Managing Director of Evolvi Rail Systems.

"TMCs and their corporate users are increasingly recognising the value of a managed travel environment when it comes to rail, and the ATV reduction is all the more satisfying given that businesses are not always in a position to book rail journeys a long time in advance."

The Evolvi system benchmarks all UK rail fares across the entire booking horizon, providing easy access to best value fares.

Five top tips from Evolvi for optimising corporate rail spend:

1- Define rail traveller rules: Evolvi's policy capability allows organisation-wide or individual rules to be set to channel purchasing habits to best value fares, ie restricting First Class travel by journey duration.

2- Book in advance: Not always possible for corporate travellers, but booking ahead will save money…sometimes a lot of money. Buying in advance for a specific train time will generally deliver best value fares, but if your return journey plans are uncertain, consider booking an advance single outbound and a flexible ticket for the return. Some train operators now offer advance tickets on the day of travel and these fares are flagged in the Evolvi system, though there are a restricted number available.

3- Schedule meetings off-peak: Travelling into major cities to arrive 'off-peak' - usually after 9am - will make budgets go further, though always check ticket validity, particularly for return journeys.

4- Always refund or exchange unused tickets: Plans change, so if tickets are unused, always make sure it is refunded or exchanged - Evolvi provides an automated process for doing this.

5- Railcards can cut cost: TMCs should encourage clients to check whether travellers qualify for Railcard discounts. Railcards can be selected in the Evolvi tool during the booking process.
